Description
Welcome to the LSA Course at Sheiling School.
Trainers: Dean Frances-Hawksley, Steve Lane, Heather Gosling and Fergus Bright.

Course Content
Block 1: Roles and Responsibilities
Exploring the expectations surrounding the Specialist LSA role, and clearly outlining how it works with the responsibilities of associated roles within education. This is effectively an introductory session.

Block 2: Child Development
Developmental milestones in the first three years (crawling, walking, speech etc.); the four lower senses; primitive and postural reflexes; seven year phases of development; thinking, feeling and willing; ego development as it relates to bodily integration.

Block 3: Rhythm and Movement
The establishing of gravitational security (balance, head position etc.); spatial exploration (and the connection with the development of healthy cognition); children’s games; movement exercises; form drawing; song and verse; temporal security; Eurythmy; the role of OT.

Block 4: Teaching and Learning
The Sheiling 3-D curriculum; supporting towards independence; experience versus concept in teaching practice; the teaching persona; role and boundaries; planning and learning objectives; assessment; ‘boiling it down’.

Block 5: Literacy and Numeracy
Speech and language; approaches to early literacy skills; phonics; pre-numeracy and the first steps towards number and operations; pebble maths; teaching number operations; games for teaching maths; phonics

Block 6: SEN
Covering: autism; ADHD; attachment issues; hysteric and epileptic constitutions; pedagogic considerations

Block 7: Approaches to Behaviour
Rules and boundaries; behaviours relating to attachment issues; recognising our own triggers; self-reflective practice; the importance of the team approach; the role of fear and shame in challenging behaviours.
